The sweeping, mountainous landscapes couldn't be faked and really are the wild, rocky Highlands of Scotland, around Loch Leven and Glen Coe, filming in the some of the same areas as as Highlander. He is not my Sovereign he never received my homage and whilst life is in this persecuted body, he never shall receive it.Braveheart location: the Scottish highlands: Loch Leven, Scotland | Photograph: iStockphoto © Juliane Jacobs Needless to say, it is very highly unlikely that Wallace was in any position to cry "Freedom", but at his so-called trial Wallace did state, " I can not be a traitor, for I owe him no allegiance. Wallace's head was placed on London Bridge, while the four quarters of his body were placed in Stirling, Aberdeen, Berwick, and Newcastle. It was only then Wallace was decapitated and dismembered. While still breathing, his genitals were sliced off, his entrails pulled out, and his innards burned in front of him. He was hanged almost to the point of death, before being taken down and horrifically mutilated. Four different horses, one per limb, dragged Wallace for miles to his execution. The film doesn't seem to hold back in detailing the gruesome execution, but the truth is the real execution was far, far worse than what appears on-screen. The historic account the film is based on does say a secret meeting occurred between Wallace and Edward I's young wife Margaret of France, so the only reason to use Isabella is to set up the twist of her carrying Wallace's child, breaking the news to a dying King Edward I (who actually wouldn't die for another two years).Ĭharged with treason, Wallace was sentenced to be hanged, drawn, and quartered. The thing is, Isabella would have been three years old at the time, and still in France. Instead, she secretly has a tryst with the freedom fighter, clearly unable to resist his charms. A key figure in the film is Isabella of France ( Sophie Marceau), wife of Edward II who was sent to negotiate with Wallace. It's not only an insult to a historic figure, but to moviegoers as well. Her real name was Marion Braidfute, changed for the film so as not to be confused with Robin Hood's Maid Marian. The indignity around the figure is that Murron wasn't even her name. That event did happen, and while it wasn't the catalyst of Wallace's vendetta against the English, it was the straw that broke the back. Wallace's wife Murron MacClannough ( Catherine McCormack) is publicly executed in the film. Women do not fare much better in the film. There's no evidence that Edward II even was gay, nor is there any record that 1st Earl of Cornwall Piers Gaveston (named 'Phillip' in the film, played by Stephen Billington), who in the film as Edward's male lover, was pushed out a window to his death by King Edward I ( Patrick McGoohan), although he was sent into exile by the monarch. Edward II is portrayed not only as homosexual but also as weak, impotent, and effeminate. The harshest stereotype, however, is given to Edward II ( Peter Hanly). ![]() While the Scottish are made out as manly men, the English are portrayed as much weaker and more feminine overall. The kilts and belted plaid in the film weren't worn by the Scots until the late-16th century, problematic for a film set in the 13th century (for that matter, English soldiers wouldn't have had matching royal uniforms). In actuality, Wallace was born in the Southwest of Scotland, the son of a minor nobleman. A young Wallace and his family, in the film, are poor farmers living in a Highland glen. If that were indeed true, then Braveheart has arguably the most realistic portrayal of Scots on film. When one pictures a Scot, the image typically depicted is one of a working-class, kilt-wearing ruffian playing bagpipes. ![]() ⊕ 0% APR for 12, 18, 24, 36, 40 or 48 Months with Equal Payments: Available on purchases of select products charged to a Samsung Financing account. Here, goat farmers can walk through the end of the feeder to put hay without disturbing the goats, hence the name. Walk-through feeders are usually placed in the middle of two pens so that goats from both pens can eat at the same time. When choosing either round or square bale feeders, make sure that your goats or sheep can reach the center of the feeder. Round bales are cheaper than square bales but will consume more space. The baled hay can be round or square (large and small), and each has its advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, here are the most common types of hay feeders you can choose from: 1. Although all of them have the same purpose, not all of them are compatible with your needs. Hay feeders come in different designs, sizes, and materials used. What Are the Types of Hay Feeders for Goats and Sheep? They are usually elevated or have a solid panel at the bottom to help reduce hay waste. These feeders have small holes or gaps so that goats will only take limited amounts of hay. In most cases, hay feeders have V-shaped racks. Hay feeders work like any kind of feeder, where goat owners put hay manually. To make sure your hay has very high quality, bring it first to a forage testing laboratory. ![]() Goats know the taste of high-quality hay, and you cannot force them to eat something they don’t like. No matter what feeding method or hay feeder you use, your goats will still not eat hay that has poor quality and will rather waste it. Nevertheless, they should be hanged so hay won’t get dirty. Durable hay nets such as Bloomoak Slow Hay Net for Horse and Goat are made of nylon rope. Just like feeders, hay nets have small gaps so that goats can only get what they can eat. Hay nets are usually intended for horses but can also be used for goats. However, the holes should be small enough to avoid the goat’s horns getting stuck in them while getting hay. Generally speaking, a hay feeder is a feeder with some gaps or holes so that goats can get only the amount of hay they can eat. So far, hay feeders are the best way to reduce hay waste during feeding. But because goats waste a lot of loose hay, you may want to reduce its supply and give them baled hay or hay pellets as alternatives. It also increases saliva production due to traditional chewing, and forage slows overall consumption. Loose hay is very beneficial to goats not only because it has high nutritional value. This material improves drainage in areas that are susceptible to water and mud accumulation, especially during winter. This pad is any solid surface that is usually made of gravel, concrete, or geotextile fabric. If your space is not enough for feeding in different areas, try constructing a so-called high-traffic area pad. Feed your goats on high traffic area pads. Aside from avoiding mold to grow on hay, feeding your goats in different areas can also help spread manure more uniformly, which can improve soil fertility. Avoid feeding on the same area.įeeding your goats in the same area repeatedly can eventually result in muddy soil, soil compaction, and excessive sod destruction, especially during winter. This is the main reason why you should not put hay on the soil. Most of them also hate eating hay on the ground, especially if another goat has already tasted it and rejected it. Molds can also easily grow in wet hay, which will eventually spoil. Goats can be very picky at times and are not keen on eating dirty or wet food. To have an idea of the right amount, separate your goats during feeding or better yet, put a temporary barrier between them. As much as possible, give your goats the amount of hay that they can only consume in a day. Don’t give goats excess hay.Īlthough excess hay can still be used later as a soil protector, it is no longer good for feeding goats. Therefore, here are some ways to prevent your goats from wasting hay: 1. This can be due to fecal contamination, physical and chemical deterioration due to poor storage and unstable weather conditions, and refusal of farm animals to eat them. ![]() Tips for Making DIY Hay Feeders for Goats and SheepĪccording to estimates, wasted hay for feeding can reach up to 60%.What to Consider in Choosing the Best Hay Feeders for Goats and Sheep?. ![]() What Are the Types of Hay Feeders for Goats and Sheep?.How Do You Keep Goats From Wasting Hay?. ![]() Geotargeting, or location-based marketing, is the outcome of using geofencing for marketing purposes to target specific people. You can also send funny timesheet reminder messages to your employee. Text message reminders can also be sent with time tracking apps to make life easier for both the employer and the employee. People are more likely to check their phone than their email, so an employee is less likely to miss the timecard reminder when it’s sent via text. The Trello interface reminded me instantly of the Scan Cards concept. The client had teams collaborating on several projects and was using the browser-based Trello system to track the tasks in these projects. That’s why I was pleasantly surprised when I finally decided to check out Trello ( ), a project management tool I had heard about from one of my clients. I use several tools to organize emails and documents by project and client today, including Microsoft’s OneNote digital binder, but I missed the Scan Card concept so much that I even thought about going back to it.Īfter going out of business in the 1990s precisely because people stopped using handwritten project planners, Scan Card was revived recently by new investors ( It’s gotten a little pricey, though, with leather organizer binders selling for $60 and up. Over the years, many software programs came along promising to help manage project lists efficiently, but none of them offered the kind of flexibility and compactness that the Scan Card system provided. Each afternoon, I painstakingly updated it from handwritten notes made during the day, moving projects among sections of the document depending on their priority status. As I gained access to minicomputer word processing systems, and later, personal computers, I moved my project list from the cards into a word processing document. It worked very well, but as technology came along, it seemed to make less sense to write out project cards by hand. Putting the project cards into the pages allowed you to quickly scan the project titles, and you could move cards from one column of slots to another as they changed priority. You wrote the project title on the top of the card, and notes about the project below. Scan Cards used square index cards placed into slots in a portfolio binder. ![]() Then, on a business trip, leafing through the airline magazine, I came across what I thought was a clever way to manage projects, the Scan Card system, which seemed to offer a perfect way to manage this process. ![]() The system I used ranked project priorities using the letters “A, B, C” and “On Hold” or “Follow Up.” As a project’s status changed, I would move it to a different part of my list.
